Guess what? You can be fit and a new mom
It can be done. After hearing countless new moms tell me how impossible it would be to find time and energy to workout after having a baby I have conquered it. No it is not easy but it is worth it and every woman is capable of it if they truly want to keep fitness in their lives post baby.
Sweet Scarlett is almost 14 weeks old now. That means for the first time in almost a year I have been able to push myself hard when working out and man it feels good.
As you all know I worked out up until I pretty much went to the hospital to have her. Those 9 months I worked out but couldn't push it. Couldn't lift so heavy it hurt, couldn't run so hard I felt like puking and couldn't build my core- but that's ok because look what came out of it ^ 💗.
September 2 we had Scarlett. Then I couldn't workout for 6 more weeks. Torture, yes. Then I got cleared which was my last post. For about 3 weeks I had to slowly rebuild my muscles and cardiovascular system. Now, 14 weeks postpartum I can push myself like I used to. I finally feel like my old self and my body is almost feeling back to normal.
I have been doing a variety of workouts and struggle every day trying to find the time to fit it in. Scarlett still isn't quite on a schedule yet so sometimes she sleeps until 7am and sometimes she is up at 5am. Sometimes she falls asleep at 7pm sometimes not until 10pm. Therefore I have to workout when I can at the spur of the moment. I am SO thankful for Jake- he is always supportive of me going to workout while he watches her. She still refuses a bottle from us so I am usually limited to 2 hours of being away.
My workouts lately:
LA Fitness: Been squeezing in some lunch workouts, and going on the weekends.
-Stairmaster for 25 minutes level 10, squats, bench, rowing, box jumps, pull ups, free weights, SAUNA(I missed this SO much during pregnancy) really focusing on full body power workouts.
Running: Mainly on weekends outside. I hate the treadmill but sometimes crank out a couple miles of sprints. I have also been running JJ right after work about a mile almost every evening while Jake and Scarlett get their bonding time.
Family walks/runs: We have gone to Fort Ben, Flat Fork Creek and used our neighborhood trails to do a few family walks/ runs. Thankfully Scarlett loves the stroller!
On Friday Jake said if he ran 5 miles that morning we could get Papa Johns for dinner. I challenged him and said I had to run 5k at lunch THEN we could get Papa Johns (no time for 5 miles.)
We had Papa Johns for dinner. But normally we are big advocates of guilt free fitness.
I ran 6.5 miles yesterday. My longest run since Scarlett. It felt amazing and hard but it was so beautiful out. When I got tired I thought about when I was dying to run after Scarlett was born but couldn't.
On my radar: I am starting Crossfit next week! I can hardly wait! I am also looking forward to spring runs/ triathlons. I am signed up for the Mini in May but am looking forward to some 5ks and other races!
I am excited for Scarlett to get on a schedule these next few months- it will make things so much easier for everyone.
Being a new mom is HARD, being a new working mom is HARDER and being a new working, breastfeeding mom who loves to workout is even HARDER but the outcome is wonderful! I am confident I am a much better mom because I do all of these things for myself and my family even though the days are long and tough.
For all the new moms out there- make time for yourself every day. Whether it is a workout or even a quick walk- DO IT!
