Fitness, Friends & Family

Image
One thing that I love about fitness is the fact that you can include your friends and family. There are so many organized runs and walks that are so fun to do with friends and family. Everyone is different when it comes to training for a big race though. Some people like to do it independently and others like to do it with someone else so they are held accountable for not missing training runs or sessions. I personally like both. Sometimes I love just working out or training for a race by myself, and other times I like to have a friend or family member alongside. Recently I have had a really nice variety of training and working out both alone and with people. My most recent race with people was Hoosiers Outrun Cancer in Bloomington. I have done this race for many, many years and it is very near and dear to me being in my home town and supporting a cause I am passionate about. My mom, dad, sister, nieces and Jake did Hoosiers Outrun Cancer this year, along with lots and lots of Bloo...

Sitting all day is NO good

Image
http://www.womenshealthmag.com/health/sedentary-lifestyle-hazards   There is nothing worse than sitting at a desk all day if you ask me. Majority of us have a typical 8-5 job that requires us to be at a desk, in front of a computer most of the day. Not only is it uncomfortable, but it is not healthy. Plus, if you are trying to get physically fit, one workout a day and then sitting all day will not give you the results you are looking for. I am lucky that my day time job is pretty flexible and we can get up whenever we want. We have lots of paths around our office, and we even have a walking station where we can be on a treadmill and work on our laptops. We are become more and more “remote” meaning people can pretty much work anywhere. I do still spend most of my time at my desk though, which can be pretty painful. To get through a work week of sitting ,there are many things you can do to save yourself.   Get up often and stretch or walk around the office...

The beauty of exercise

Image
Happy Friday! It sure has been a long week- but lots of successful workouts happened this week. I capped off the week with an early morning at LA Fitness doing squats. I was super happy with doing 135 10 times! Let me tell you though, I have been working on squat gains for the past year. Jake is my motivator for these- he has the strongest legs I have ever seen. This is absolutely the most beautiful time of the year in Indiana. One of the best ways to get out and enjoy all the leaves changing is to get out and run, walk, or bike. I have been trying to take full advantage of the limited time we have left to get outside and workout. I try to go out right after work and run 3-6 miles. I get so much joy out of this because I am getting a workout in AND I am able to see all of the beautiful trees. Yesterday Jake and I did 2-a-days and I was very satisfied with my 2nd workout which was a run after work. I was able to get all 4 of my miles under 9 minutes. My goal is to run a half marathon ...

Keeping it simple with diet

Image
I have never been really obsessed with food and diet like a lot of people are. There are so many diet trends these days it is hard to follow them all. I think to each is there own when it comes to diet. You have to figure out what makes you feel good, what makes you feel bad, and what works best for you and your family. Jake and I keep it pretty simple around here and it works just fine for us. We work out everyday so we are constantly burning, meaning we may eat more than the average human. Here are a few things about our "diet": We take our lunch during the week We eat at home (or Subway) during the week for dinner We eat out on the weekends We love pizza We love Chinese We love ice cream We love beer And yes we eat pizza, Chinese, ice cream and drink beer. We also keep in mind the following:   Water is the best thing we can put into our body Our bodies need food as fuel since we do workout so often ...

Girls Can Lift Too!

Image
This is something I am very passionate about. If I didn't lift weights I would never be able to run 8 minute miles, or 1:50 half marathons, or win first place in a du-althon. Lifting weights has not only made me stronger, but it has prevented injuries, helped my body image and given me confidence. I was just reading a Women's Health article and it said "Strong is the new pretty." I don't think women realize all of the benefits that lifting weights has. No, lifting weights will not make you big and bulky, it will make your clothes fit better, make you burn fat faster and help your overall body image. I understand lifting weights can be intimidating if it is not something you do often, or if you have never done it before. It takes time to build up muscles and to learn  how much you can lift and how often. I generally lift weights 3-4 days a week, but I like to incorporate it with cardio. Some people like to dedicate days to only lifting which is fine. I am go...

Finding Time For Fitness

Image
A topic I have been wanting to write about for a long time. Before I get going, let me get you thinking... there are 24 hours in 1 day... 7-8 of those are spent sleeping so that leaves about 17 hours of awake time. You probably spend 9 hours working (including travel time). That leaves 8 hours of free time. I PROMISE you that you have at least 30 minutes to do something active.   I have been a busy person my entire life, and I love it. Luckily I love working out so finding time to do that in my busy day is easy. I know for many people, especially people who despise working out, it may be hard to fit a workout into your day. Incorporating fitness into your daily schedule could be challenging at first. The benefits of working out every day and fitting it into your busy schedule are far greater than the loss of 1 hour of sleep, or the energy spent packing a bag for the day. Trust me, once you start making fitness a part of your daily schedule, it will suddenly feel wrong to not wor...

Welcome To My Blog!

Image
Hi everyone! Welcome to my blog! I am so excited to finally share my love for fitness with all of you. Let me start by introducing myself. This is me (waving) at my most recent race: My name is Krista and I am a 25 year old fitness enthusiast. I love running, biking, lifting, tumbling, and anything else that involves getting my heart rate up. The most exciting thing about me right now is I am a brand new wife to this wonderful husband of mine, Jake.     Jake loves fitness too, so you will be seeing lots of him through this blog because usually we work out together and we share a lot of the same fitness goals. I am an IU grad and will always be a passionate HOOSIER fan. I work full time at a Healthcare Communications group, and I am also a cheerleading coach and tumbling instructor at Indiana Elite All Stars. Why am I starting a blog? Health and fitness have been a love of mine for many years now and becoming a personal trainer is a goal of mine (more ...
